First read Ed Ward’s superior post about McDonald’s, Requiem for Mickey D, which I totally did not see until exactly right after I wrote this. It’s a small world, after all.
A few years back, a friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, nearly broke his hand trying to punch a grinning and primary-colored (yet, sadly, [...]

For any Berliner who doesn’t know — I just got back in town and someone (Yuhang) had to remind me — the Karneval der Kulturen (Carnival of Cultures) is coming up this three-day weekend. The KdK is so organised this year that it even has its own symbol (see t-shirt above) — if a stylised [...]

I’m back in home sweet hizzy Berlin. Actually, Yuhang and I have been secretly back in town since Tuesday but the haze of eastern return jetlag has only now let me stick my head up over the parapet of domestic devolution. It’s always a weird experience to get on a plane in Newark, New Jersey [...]

So, check it out. I’m sitting against Micah’s refrigerator (the only spot that currently supplies free laptop wifi) in his new wide angle, wood floored Chicago apartment. It’s a literally gorgeous day and we’re minutes away from hitting the road in a rental Dodge Stratus with all arrows pointing toward Paris, Kentucky aka home of [...]

I’m wandering toward Chicago with Yuhang in tow. First a coupla days in the city of dreams (and trash), crashed in the middle of Brooklyn (L train, baby) with super hospitable Berliner couch-surfer Johann-Sebastian. This damn city is, as ever, chock full of discoverability. Just today: (1) a Turkish grill on West 14th Street boasting [...]

More where that came from at Tagesspiegel (scroll to “Knut kurios”).
Gridskipper has a dedicated Knut tag now… as do I.

The German section on the usually-decent about.com posts an annotated list of Movies Shot in Berlin. It’s not bad but it seems hardly thorough. Flightplan with Jodie Foster (2005) is all Berlin, at least the beginning terrestial parts. The first scene is in the Alexanderplatz U-bahn station (U8) for crying out loud.
Hollywood and English-language Films [...]

Bjork gets all extroverted and up in your grill on her newest album, Volta. She told the New York Times recently that she’s a fighter, busy fighting for that “soulful place” and that’s just fine by me. This is an exciting album for music heads, all the more amazing when one considers how few high-profile [...]
