JFK, while becoming president the same year the Berlin Wall was built (1961), did not in fact hold his 1963 Ich bin ein Berliner speech in front of the wall. He declared himself a jelly donut one district south of Mitte at Rathaus (city hall) Schöneberg. I just wanted to clear that up, because I just learned it myself. I trust I’m not the only one who had that mistaken belief. I hope.

Rathaus Schöneberg, the administrative center of West Berlin, being as how the Rotes Rathaus was deep in Commieland. He also sent a nice letter to the folks at Henne, near your house, apologizing for missing dinner there and promising to return on his next trip. They’ve posted it above the bar.
I knew Henne was renowned for its chicken but I’ve nevery heard the JFK story. I haven’t been yet, but apparently you need reservations, which is unusual for a chicken shack that resembles an Eckkneipe. The Kennedy connect certainly helps explain some of its outsized fame.
So does the chicken. It *is* an Eckkneipe, which is why it’s so remarkable. But it’s an Eckkneipe with rockin’ chicken.
I’m glad someone is getting it straight. The whole “Obama’s copying JFK by speaking in front of Brandenburg Tor” thing was driving me batty.
I never heard of Henne though. Sounds like someplace I might have to try on my next visit.
My pleasure, the fact checkers are already on vacation I guess. I can’t count how many articles I’ve seen lately connecting Obama and the Gate and JFK. Lazy journalism at its finest.
[...] *UPDATE* Schade. Dieses Obama-Macht-den-JFK konnte man wunderschön ausschlachten. Stimmt aber so nicht. Zu lesen bei benperry. [...]
