Gods of Blitz - Greetings from Flashbackville [mp3]

This is the track you wanna be on the speakers when you enter the club at 2AM, out of your mind and looking for trouble. I guess you can call it bad-ass electro-punk. Courtesy of the German Hives, Gods of Blitz. Where in Germany, I haven’t the slightest idea. I first heard this track on Ministry of Sound’s fifth compilation of new German electro, Neue Heimat (2006).

MIA - Tanz der Moleküle

MIA rocks Berlin like it never left the eighties. And that’s how Berlin likes it.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Für den Untergang

The blog for WFMU, New York’s most beloved eclectic/independent radio station, recently uncovered an ultra-rare 19-song compilation of Berlin underground music from 1979-1983 called Als Die Partisanen Kamen (someone on ebay is asking €1,00 for their copy) and put the whole thing online. Nice one. Definitely check out this entry if you wanna know what all the fuss is/was about. Avant garde extreme.

Devastations - Sex and Mayhem [ mp3 ]

Night time is (still) the right time. These dusty Australians just moved to Berlin and, well, that seems appropriate. Madrugada from Norway did the same a few years ago and cranked out a smoky, rain-drenched street dream masterpiece. I can understand why the critics can reach for easy comparisons (Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Dirty Three, Cat Power…), but they do have a sound all to themselves. I thought Nick Cave’s Red Right Hand was the best of the class until I heard the langorous beat on this beast. Ahh, the perils of rock ‘n’ roll decadence (props: Axl Rose).

2/5 BZ - Okuz Istanbul (Peel Session II) [ mp3 ]
added: 2006-07-29
2/5 BZ (Serhat Koksal) is a DJ from Turkey. This cat operates on another astral plane, so conventional music listeners beware. Adventurous listeners, come on in. His music jives well with his techni-color website and, presumably, his mind. His myspace site registers him (impishly) in the ‘Regional Mexican, Western Swing and Grime’ genres. A restless world-traveller, Koksal will be an artist-in-residency in Berlin for August-September @ PODEWIL for the Tesla Sound & Video Art Project.

Tiefschwarz - Damage (M.A.N.D.Y. Remix) [ mp3 ]

Tomcraft - Loneliness [ mp3 ]

Just in time for the Love Parade, the best techno song I ever heard. From Munich even. Dig it.
